How do you determine what you need to improve? If you can afford a CDN and don’t mind a bit of extra cost in exchange for better performance, then go ahead and install one. But if you have no CDN yet, or are just starting with your site, or just don’t know what CDN services are available…
Here are some simple things that can help you cut down on the number of HTTP requests that your site sends:
Put Your Maximum Page Load Time First. As mentioned earlier, the amount of time it takes for your website to load depends on various factors.
The type of connection between you and Google – this affects the number of HTTP requests made by your website (the request file size) and is an important factor in determining whether or not the load time will be fast enough for users.
Your server settings – these will affect the frequency at which your server runs checks on whether there are any errors in loading pages (this will affect how long it takes for pages to reload). Your server configuration – this is also important in determining how long page loads take.
For example, if you’ve set up Apache HTTP without mod_deflate enabled (which was my default setting), then setting up mod_deflate will reduce the amount of time it takes for pages to reload by reducing their file size (thus increasing the number of requests sent).
These are only some examples however; there are tons more things that could be done to optimize our sites based on these factors. I highly recommend reading through Google’s documentation for more information on this topic. You can also download an online speed test tool (or use one built into Google’s Chrome browser) so that you can manually see what kinds of sites load fast enough; I found one which lets me manually adjust all these settings before running it against my site from within Google Chrome itself.
